A native Philadelphian, Patty Jackson, was born on Monday, November 4th, 1963, and has entered her silver anniversary in broadcasting. She attended South Philadelphia Motivation High School and the American Academy of Broadcasting before embarking on her radio career at WSSJ in Camden, NJ, when it was owned by Broadcast Pioneers member Pat Delsi. Her diverse career has included country, urban and pop formats, including Power 99 FM and Q102. But, her warm and soulful voice found its true home with adult radio listeners on WDAS-FM. Patty is the reigning Queen of Mid-days from 10am to 3pm, Monday through Saturday. Patty’s brand of realness has kept her audience connected throughout her 25-year broadcasting career.

It’s another honor for Oprah Winfrey. On December 28th, she will be one of the recipients at the Kennedy Center Honors along with Sir Paul McCartney, Choreographer/Dancer Bill T. Jones and Country Legend Merle Haggard. Oprah is preparing for her 25th and final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show, which starts its new season September 13th.

El DeBarge is the cover guy for the new issue of Ebony magazine. DeBarge is releasing a new album on the 28th called Second Chance. He’s coming to Philly on October 9th with a concert for The Baptist Temple Arts And Culture Center, Broad and Berks on Temple University’s campus. In the Ebony magazine feature, he talks about releasing his first album in 16 years, his drug addiction, and his family of 12 kids.

The new issue of Essence is hot with Blair Underwood, Boris Kodjoe and Lance Gross as the cover guys. The TV hunks look good as they gear up for their new shows. Blair Underwood will play the President Of The United States in the suspense filled drama The Event, which airs on Monday nights beginning September 20th. Boris Kodjoe will be starring with Gugu Mbatha-Raw as husband and wife in the action drama Undercovers, which will air on Wednesday nights beginning September 22nd.


The release date for Tyler Perry’s movie For Colored Girls has been moved up. The movie was supposed to come out next January, but the movie is now being released on November 5th. The movie, based on the 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange, stars Janet Jackson, Anika Noni Rose, Whoopi Goldberg, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Macy Gray, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper and Khalil Kain. Tyler Perry wrote and directed this movie version, and Oscar buzz and hype is already surrounding the film.

Toni Braxton has lost her Las Vegas home to foreclosure. The home was up for sale, and she still owes a million dollars on it. Braxton has been trying to jump start her career, and losing one of her homes is just the latest setback.

Will Rapper/Actor T.I. wind up back in jail? Last week, T.I. and his wife Tiny were arrested and found with a small amount of drugs including marijuana and ecstasy. T.I. is still on parole, and a judge has to decide if he violated his probation. He was arrested in California, and was ordered to return home to Atlanta. If a judge rules against him, he could wind up back in jail. With a hit movie (Takers) and a hot career, what was he thinking?

The official words should happen this week Jennifer Lopez will be named as a judge on American Idol. The lineup will be J-Lo, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson. Kara DioGuardi announced she wasn’t coming back last week.

Mel B talks about Eddie Murphy in her new reality show It’s A Scary World. She says when Murphy claimed he wasn’t the father of her baby, it was a horrible time and it hurt being called liar. In the reality show, Mel appears with her husband Stephen Belafonte and her two daughters Phoenix Chi and Angel Iris. Angel Iris is Murphy’s youngest daughter.

Katherine Jackson is producing a movie about her family. According to the website jacksonsecretvault.com, Mom Katherine wants to tell her story. Papa Joe is already telling his story. In a recent interview, he says beating his children kept them out of gangs.

Brian McKnight has responded to charges that a rape occurred at his home two years ago. Porn Star Alana Evans claims she was raped at the home of Brian McKnight two years ago, and his sons helped to cover it up. McKnight was not home at the time but his sons were with a family friend. Porn Star Evans, who admitted she was drunk, took to twitter claiming she was raped by the family friend. An investigation did take place, and according to the police report, a rape did not take place. McKnight says neither he nor his sons participated in a cover up and have cooperated with police. McKnight says he agrees with the results of the investigation, and that he and his family would never cover up such a serious crime.

Terrence Howard joins the cast of the Law And Order franchise on Sept 29th. That’s the day of the debut of Law And Order: Los Angeles. Actress Regina Hall (the Scary Movie franchise) is also a part of the cast.

Terry McMillan’s returns with her latest book Getting To Happy. It’s the long awaited sequel to Waiting To Exhale. The adventure continues 15 years later for “Bernadine,” “Savannah,” “Robin” and “Gloria.”

What a year it’s been for Actress Paula Patton. She and hubby Robin Thicke welcomed a baby son, Julian. She joined the cast of Law And Order: SVU, and she just signed on for the new Mission Impossible sequel with Tom Cruise.

Jamie Foxx is returning to TV as the executive producer of The Jamie Foxx Project. The show will debut next fall, and he says it will be a sketch comedy show along the lines of In Living Color, the show that gave him his big break.

As season two gets underway for The Wendy Williams Show, you will notice new set changes. Behind the scenes, a new producer has been put in place. Word has it the show is being toned down. Don’t change Wendy! There is no one else like her on TV, and that is what makes Wendy Wendy. If the show took a ratings hit, blame it on all the reruns and long hiatus breaks. Let Wendy shine and do her thing!

Our condolences go out to Whoopi Goldberg. The View co-host recently lost her mother Emma, who succumbed to complications from a stroke. Goldberg had to leave the London production of Sister Act earlier this summer to care for her mom when she first suffered the stroke. In other Whoopi news, along with co-staring in Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls film, she has a new book coming out, Is It Just Me, where she talks about what’s on her mind.

Usher has announced plans for his upcoming tour, which includes a December 16th at the Wells Fargo Center.

It’s going to be baby number 8 for Boxer Mike Tyson. Tyson is expecting a boy with his wife Lakiha Spicer. This is her second child with Tyson. They also have a toddler girl.

Reggie Bush is losing his Heisman Trophy. In 2005, he won the award when he was a student at Southern Cal. Apparently Reggie was accepting gifts and money from sports agents. If Bush loses it, he’ll be the first player in the 75-year history of the award to be stripped of the Heisman Trophy. Bush is now on the Super Bowl championship team The New Orleans Saints.

Hot couples news Halle Berry and French Actor Oliver Martinez. The two started dating after they met on the set of the movie Dark Tide.

There’s also Serena Williams and New York Knicks Star Amar’e Stoudemire. Speaking of Serena, a lot of people are questioning her new look. Did she get plastic surgery? Was it the nose, cheeks or did she get botox? Hmmmmmmmm!

Congrats to Neicy Nash. She just got engaged to longtime boyfriend Jay Tucker. A May 2011 wedding is being planned.

Comedian Jay Pharoah is the latest addition to Saturday Night Live. He is the new regular for the new season.

Vanessa Williams is geared up for the new season of Desperate Housewives. Williams is joining the cast along with Actor Reggie Austin, who plays her basketball player husband. The new season kicks off September 26th. Williams looks amazing in the promos.

The 11th season of Dancing With The Stars kicks off on the 20th. This year’s dancers include David Hasselhoff (Baywatch, Knight Rider) Kirstie Alley (Cheers), Michael Bolton, Football Star Kurt Warner, Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, Singer Brandy, Kyle Massey (Corey In The House, That’s So Raven) former husband of Vanessa Williams and Basketball Star Rick Fox and Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson.

Don’t look for Singer Mariah Carey to talk about her pregnancy. Carey is four months pregnant, and she’s very superstitious. This will be the first child for her and hubby Nick Cannon.

Anita Baker is set to release a new album new on January 18th. Baker, 52, says she’s excited about the new project called 21st Century Love.

So where’s Singer D’Angelo? …He’s got a new album coming later this year.

Will Downing latest project Love Lust And Lies arrives in stores September 14th.

Eric Benet’s new album, Lost In Time, arrives in stores in November. The first single is Sometimes I Cry. The album features Faith Evans, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi and Eddie Levert.

Freddie Jackson has a new album due out in January of 2011.

Finally on the new music front, I had a chance to catch up with Faith Evans. She gave me the scoop on her album Something About Faith. It’ll be released October 5th, and she’s got duets with Eric Benet and El DeBarge.

Steve Harvey’s new book Straight Talk, No Chaser: How To Find, Keep And Understand A Man is due in bookstores this fall. It’s the follow up to his bestseller Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man.

The Stand Up To Cancer TV event airs this Friday, September 10th at 8pm. The special will air on all the broadcast networks, and will feature Will Smith, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Gwyneth Paltrow, just to name a few. The show will be hosted by the network news anchors: Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Diana Sawyer.

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien is back with another installment of her Black In America specials. This time the focus is the black church, and airs October 21st.

September 20th is the start date for the Holly Robinson’s daytime talk show debut. The show, simply called The Talk, will also feature Sharon Osborne and Moderator Julie Chen with a host of other women, a la The View.

Patti LaBelle is headed to Broadway. She will be playing the mother of the lead character in the musical Fela! LaBelle starts September 14th, and will be in the production through the first of the year.

Takers Co-star Idris Elba is going to be the Honorary Chairperson along with Jimmy Rollins at this year’s Philly’s Men Are Cooking taking place Saturday, November 27th. I’ll keep you posted with more details later.

Iron Man II with Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle comes out on September 28th.

Toy Story III, starring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Don Rickles, is out November 3rd.

The TV ONE Unsung series returns on September 13th. The new season kicks off with the late Teddy Pendergrass and late includes music documentaries on Tammi Terrell, Heatwave, George Clinton, The O’Jays, Angela Winbush, The Fat Boys, Musical Youth and Miki Howard.

Congrats to Chaka Khan! Khan is being honored at the 32nd Annual UNCF telethon, An Evening Of Stars. The show airs in syndication January 2011.

Sherri Shepherd has been named the new host of the Newlywed Game. The new revival of the classic series kicks off this November airing weeknights at 6pm on the Game Show Network.

Will Jay-Z take over the management role for the career of his wife Beyonce? Beyonce has never forgiven her dad Matthew Knowles for fathering a child outside of his marriage to her mother Tina, and she has not been happy with his management style. Jay-Z wants her to be more edgy, and she wants to be more edgy, ala Lady Gaga. Jay-Z is forming a new management company, and we hear Beyonce will be his first client.

Holmes Lounge is back. Steve Holmes and crew are back in business with a new location: 2029 Erieal Road in Blackwood, New Jersey. They’ve got the sautéed crabs and seafood and are open Thursday-Sunday, takeout and delivery only. Go to Holmeslounge.com

Iyanla Van Zandt has a new book coming out in November called Peace From Broken Pieces: How To Get Through What You’re Going Through. Van Zandt is returning to the literary world after suffering the loss of her daughter and the end of her marriage.

Queen Latifah is teaming up with Dolly Parton for a gospel film. Joyful Noise is a movie musical about two women who come together to save a small town gospel choir. The rapper/actress and the country queen join forces on the silver screen when the movie arrives in theatres in 2012.

The MTV Video Music Awards are set for September 12th. Kanye West returns, and he says he is a new man. Last year, West made a fool of himself when he went on stage while Country Sensation Taylor Swift was accepting her prize. West snatched her Moonman out of her hands. He later apologized. This year he will be performing. Chelsea Handler is hosting, and she says she wants to bring Kanye and Swift together again. Usher is one of the scheduled performers.

The YMCA is hosting their Appreciation Day beginning at 10am on Saturday, September 18th at the West Philly Chapter on Chestnut Street, between 51st and 52nd.

The 23rd Annual Soul Train Awards will air on November 28th.

WHAT’S THE UNDERGROUND BUZZ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Television personality is finding it hard to return to TV. He’s good at what he does, but according to opinion polls he is not well liked. What’s the problem? Maybe it’s because he cheated on his then wife and regularly made fun of his morning show colleagues. He is being rumored to be the host of a new daytime show.
